5 Summer Lawn Care Tips for Your Home

After several months of having your grass covered in ice, snow and leaves, it is time to start rejuvenating your lawn and making it look gorgeous for the summer. That’s what it’s there for!

Lawn care complements everything else you to do to your home. Everything from adding another bedroom to your home or remodeling your bathroom, lawn care is the perfect complement. It is also necessary as it can increase the value of your home immensely.

In order to have a pristine front lawn and backyard, the average homeowner thinks that all you have to do is mow the grass and feed it with water. There is a lot more to it than that.

Remember, the summer heat can take a serious toll on your lawn. This means that certain actions you take will also have an impact on how your grass will grow and what your lawn will look like. Simply put: if you’re flippant and unserious about your lawn then it won’t look nice.

Here are five lawn care tips for the summer:

1. Mowing the Grass at the Right Height

It is perhaps counterintuitive but you should refrain from giving your lawn a buzzcut. Yes, we don’t want to spend more time mowing than we have to, but buzzcuts hurt the grass.

What you should do instead is mow your grass at the right height. During the summertime, modify your mower height so you can leave the grass a bit taller. What the ideal height is really depends on the type of grass that your home has.

The reason why this is important is because taller grass prevents weeds, shades soil and facilitates deeper roots.

Once August rolls around, you will witness the best lawn in the neighbourhood.

2. Water Your Lawn the Correct Way

Again, it may be counterintuitive, but you shouldn’t water your lawn as much as you do now.

Ultimately, it is best to water your lawn that goes deep into the grass, which should be done from time to time. Here is a trick: place a tuna can on your grass and once the water reaches that height then you know you have fed your lawn a good amount of water.

3. Leave Your Clippings on the Lawn

You may be a fastidious individual and you hate seeing clippings on your lawn. However, these clippings are important to your lawn because it helps your lawn and will apparently save you money on fertilizer. Some experts also refer to it as “grasscycling.”

4. Clean the Litter & Your Dog’s Poop

There are two common instances that happen to your lawn: litter and dog poop.

First, in the summer, litter is pretty common, from both your home and bystanders. You should remove all of this litter – toys, chairs, garbage and other things – so that it doesn’t damage the grass or even the lawnmower.

Second, dog urine and poop can lead to dead spots on your lawn. One of the best ways to avoid dying grass is to immediately water the area to remove the urine in the soil. Moreover, try to train your dog to use other areas of the property to relieve themselves, like the driveway.

5. Never Park on the Grass

If you park your vehicle on the lawn then here is a question: how much do you hate your grass?

On the other hand, if you really appreciate your lawn then it is important to never, ever, park or even drive on the lawn. It causes soil compaction, dead grass and damaged turf crowns.

Another piece of advice: when there is a drought or temperatures are in the 30s, limit foot traffic on your lawn.
